GE Healthcare offers a range of cell density gradient media for cell separation and cell enrichment, including Ficoll and Percoll products. For cell separation based on cell surface markers, ready-to-use affinity chromatography media are available. Customized chromatography media can be produced for specific industrial process separations when suitable media are not available from our standard product range. Automated cell processing systems are also available for isolating and processing specific cell types.
The therapeutic potential of cell-based biotechnology is enormous. However, not all cell types have the same properties and capacities. It is therefore necessary to isolate and/or enrich cell populations of interest, depending on the intended therapeutic strategy.
Density gradient centrifugation media, such as Ficoll-Paque, provide a flexible general purpose approach to isolate specific cell types or subcellular components based on size and/or density. In some cases, molecules expressed at the cell surface can be used to isolate specific cell types, using affinity chromatography media. As certain cell types are present at low levels in peripheral or cord blood, the challenge in cell-based therapies is to obtain high yields of cell recovery from various tissues. In this context, tissues are processed using automated systems, yielding large numbers of diverse primary, regenerative cell types.
Fractionation of subcellular structures is a finely tuned process, allowing access to the cell interior while preserving subcellular structural integrity.
Gradient density media are excellent for isolating microorganisms from a wide source of samples from culture media to infected cells.
Primary cells are of great value for establishing cultures or for direct analysis applied to basic research, drug discovery or cell therapy research.
