Microcarriers

Our selection of microcarriers allows the culture of many anchorage-dependent cell types.

Many cell types are characterized by anchorage-dependent growth, and can only be propagated as adherent monolayers. The culture of adherent cells on microcarriers offers enormous advantages over traditional roller-bottle and stirred-tank, perfusion, or air-lift culture methods. Microcarriers provide anchorage, increased surface area, improved exposure to nutrients, and protection from shearing forces, all of which contribute to better cell growth. Microcarriers have been shown to be reliable and cost-effective for both lab and industrial-scale culture of eukaryotic cells and some prokaryotic cells, reducing culture medium costs while decreasing labor and lowering the risk of contamination. Microcarriers have been developed to meet the requirements of many cell types, including delicate cells such as primary cells, hepatocytes, or hybridomas.
